In most modern buildings there is movement of air and water in the heating and ventilation systems using pumps and fans. In many cases these devices are operated at full speed using mechanical valves and dampers to vary flows and pressures. By varying the speed of the fans and pumps there is potential for substantial reductions in electricity consumption as there is a cubic relationship between the devices speed and the energy consumed.
